Hospital support staff are set to take industrial action alongside nurses next month on March 7.

More than 10,000 hospital support staff, who include healthcare assistants, porters, cleaners and security staff, were promised a job evaluation scheme which they believe would result in higher pay if their roles expanded. However this evaluation never took place.

According to RTÉ News, the support staff voted 94pc to back the strike action.

SIPTU health Division Organiser Paul Bell said the industrial action would involve a full withdrawal of labour in the identified hospitals.

This will put added pressure onto hospitals that are already facing staff shortages and overcrowding across the country.
