As alarm grows over the issue of nutrition in schools, Dr Reilly has expressed serious concern that young people are too easily disposed to junk food and fizzy drinks during the school day.

While stopping short of calling for a ban on the sale of junk food in schools, Dr Reilly said measures are required to ensure there is an adequate supply of healthy food such as fruit.

"I don't like the idea that these vending machines contain products that are obesogenic," Dr Reilly told the Irish Independent.

"So when it comes to them I think we should have some policy where we can support vending machines that contain healthy produce. It's easier to get your hands on a sugar-added drink than it is to get water."
