Over 60,000 vials of anabolic steroids have been seized in a major swoop involving over €2m worth of illegal medicines.

Anabolic steroids are prescription-only medicines that are also being sold on the black market to  increase muscle mass and improve athletic performance.

The crackdown was made by officers of An Garda Síochána, Revenue and the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) at a number of locations in Co Donegal.

One person was arrested.

The operation was supported by Revenue’s detector dog.

Other medicines, including human growth hormone and products for male impotence, were also detained.

The total value of illegal medicines detained is estimated to be in excess of €2 million.

In addition, a car was seized, for breach of Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) regulations, along with a substantial amount of cash.

Evidence of an illegal medicines manufacturing operation was also found.

The operation involved gardaí from Buncrana and Letterkenny, revenue enforcement officers from Letterkenny, Dundalk and Monaghan, and enforcement officers from the HPRA.

Other searches were carried out in Northern Ireland by the Police Service of Northern Ireland.
