The Ballsbridge native celebrated her day with a glass of Champagne and some tips for friends and family who gathered at Ailesbury Nursing Home in Sandymount, Dublin. "Plenty of fresh air, good food, and an odd sherry, that is the only thing you need," she said, adding that she also always used a good moisturiser.

Mrs Dempsey still remembers the day a child was shot dead during the Rising and the outbreak of the First World War 101 years ago, but insisted: "I had a very happy life all the time."
