GPs have expressed grave concern about proposals to downgrade services in Portlaoise Hospital in the wake of the recent damning Hiqa report.

The group of 42 family doctors from Laois were responding to plans to limit A&E opening hours to 8am to 8pm next year and also remove complex surgery.

They warned that limiting the opening hours would result in significant illness and death for their patients and many would miss out on the vital "golden hour" for treatment to save their lives.

They said they cannot understand how any reduction in surgery could improve safety. They said they could not support any downgrade in surgical cover that places mothers and babies at risk.
