The death toll from the flu has more than doubled, claiming the lives of fifteen patients this winter.

The new figure shows another eight people have died from complications of the virus in the last week.

All those who died were over the age of 65, the HSE announced today.

It comes as flu levels continue to rise with the current outbreak unlikely to peak for another two weeks.

It is expected to continue to circulate for weeks afterwards leading to outbreaks in nursing homes in particular.

The virus is adding to the pressures on hospitals which are under severe strain from the trolley crisis.

There were 262 patients hospitalised last week with 27 placed in critical care.
