'Coombe needs big upgrade'
The operating theatre in Coombe maternity hospital is not fit for purpose and major investment is needed to upgrade the facility, it has emerged.
Hygiene inspectors from the Health Information and Quality Authority (Hiqa) found during an unannounced inspection in August that the operating department left mothers and babies at risk of infection.
They said that due to inadequate storage facilities, sterile supplies were being stored inappropriately within operating rooms.
The substantial amount of exposed pipe work and electrical wiring on ceilings and along walls did not facilitate effective cleaning.
In response, a spokesman for the Coombe said it endorsed Hiqa's key finding that risks cannot be addressed without major capital investment.
He said that since Hiqa's visit, the Coombe received notification that its theatre re-development business case has been approved by the HSE.
The hospital is currently awaiting details of the timeline for the necessary funding for the project.
He said: "In the interim, improvements are ongoing in the theatre department in advance of the planned major theatre re- development."
