Ban on gay blood donors for review

A medical conference held by the Irish Blood Transfusion Service Board (IBTSB) looks set to recommend lifting the lifetime ban on gay men donating blood.
The conference is on April 21-22 in the Royal College of Surgeons and it is expected that a recommendation to remove the ban for life will be made soon afterwards.
In a report last year, the IBTSB said the removal of the ban was “a desirable social objective”. The final decision will be taken by the health minister, currently Leo Varadkar.
