Back pain is now one of the major causes of people being out of work for long periods.
Friends First said the majority of the €34m it paid out on income protection policies last year related to back injuries.
The sedentary nature of modern office work was blamed for the rise in back-related problems.
An income protection policy provides a replacement income if you cannot work due to illness or injury after a certain period of time.
Insurer Friends First said back issues accounted for 28pc of the €34m in income protection claims last year.
This was highest category for claims, followed by psychological issues, neurological conditions, and cancer.
Friends First's Karen Gallagher said people were suffering from back pain because they are not taking enough exercise.
