Former RTÉ newsreader Anne Doyle has urged people to be aware of their older neighbours, particularly at Christmas.

Doyle (64) was on hand to launch the Alone campaign.

"Loneliness and isolation can be real problems for older people and it's important that we are all aware of this," she said.

However, she poured cold water on rumours she will be tangoing in RTÉ on 'Dancing with the Stars'.

"I was never going to be doing 'Dancing with the Stars'," she said. "Contrary to the good wishes I have gotten from people and the endless requests for tickets and the pledges of votes, at this stage I think I nearly should be doing it. I believe I was spotted at some choreography session and I said, 'I believe it must have been in the local pub'."

Doyle also sent well wishes to former RTÉ colleague Gay Byrne, who has revealed he may have prostate cancer.
