Having a ball raising cash for quake victims

IRELAND pledged a further €9m in aid for the people of Haiti yesterday, with the emphasis now on providing shelter to millions of homeless in Port-au-Prince as the rainy season begins, writes Jason O'Brien.

Peter Power, the Minister of State for Overseas Development, yesterday attended an international donors conference at the UN in New York aimed at co-ordinating financial assistance for the country which was devastated by an earthquake in January.

Mr Power pledged €9m from the Government over three years towards helping the long-term reconstruction effort. Some €4m has already been donated by the taxpayer. Haitian Finance Minister Ronald Baudin has said that the country was hoping to obtain commitments of just over $4bn over three years. Funds of €1.3m raised for Haiti at Masses in Dublin last month have already been distributed.

Meanwhile, the Savoy Theatre in Cork will host the Mad Hatters' Ball in aid of the Haiti house-building charity Haven on Friday, April 9. Pictured by Miki Barlok at the launch were, from left, Lockdown models Rebecca Buckley, Derbhile Lee, Clodagh Casey, and Amy Cole.
