Harney opposes €7bn bill for nursing home injustice
HEALTH Minister Mary Harney yesterday revealed it will cost €7bn to compensate those claiming they were denied state-funded nursing home care.
But Ms Harney said paying out the massive sum would impact on current health funds.
The comment comes in the wake of a damning report by Ombudsman Emily O'Reilly, which investigated the right to nursing home care in Ireland.
The report said the State had consistently failed to meet its nursing-care obligations over four decades and had deprived "very many people" of their legal entitlements.
And it revealed that the State was facing more than 300 legal actions from people who were denied publicly funded nursing home care.
Speaking in the Dail last night Ms Harney insisted the State was "vigorously" contesting the legal actions against it.
