Handling of hospital crisis 'a shambles'

Brian McDonald

NEW arrangements to be put in place at Roscommon County Hospital when the A&E department closes on Monday were angrily dismissed last night as "a sop" with claims that no proper plan is in place for the service.

The chairman of the Hospital Action Committee, John McDermott, described the HSE and government handling of the crisis at the hospital as "a shambles".

Unions representing workers at the hospital were last night locked in negotiation with HSE management after earlier warning that they would not co-operate with the new arrangements unless they received commitments on safety, staffing and funding.

But it was clear last night that, with or without the unions' co-operation, the HSE and the Government were determined to press ahead with the closure of the A&E.

The emergency department is due to be replaced by an Urgent Care Centre. This will operate from 8am to 8pm and will be staffed by junior doctors
