NEARLY half of people who receive gift vouchers never get round to using them.
The National Consumer Agency (NCA) has warned recipients of gift vouchers and gift cards to redeem them as quickly as possible, after discovering that 48pc of people let them expire.
The agency said that using them promptly also lowered the risk of the consumer losing out in the event of the business closing down.
More than 800 consumers called the agency last year for information relating to gift vouchers and gift cards.
Queries concerned what one should do if a company was going out of business or had already shut down.
Consumers also asked about misplaced vouchers and cards, unused balances and other terms and conditions.
"It is very important if you received a gift voucher that you check the expiry date, terms and conditions and make a plan to spend the voucher," chief executive of NCA Karen O'Leary said.
"This will ensure you get the enjoyment out of the gift and reduce the risk of problems occurring when you go to use it."
