Guns found on school roof
TWO guns found hidden on the roof of a primary school may have been there for a number of weeks, it has emerged.
Authorities at Scoil Mhic Easmainn in Tralee, Co Kerry, had been aware the school was part of an ongoing garda investigation since Monday.
Two shotguns were discovered on the roof of the 300-pupil gaelscoil at Rahoonane in a residential part of the town on Wednesday evening.
Principal Maire Mhic Giolla Rua told the Irish Independent there had been a garda presence at the school since Monday.
"We were aware since the beginning of the week there was a garda presence in the school in the evening or at night when there were no school personnel in the building," Ms Mhic Giolla Rua said.
School authorities said there were no signs of forced entry and the roof had been accessed from the outside of the building.
"It was something that was outside of the building and inaccessible to anyone or any of the children in the school," Ms Mhic Giolla Rua added.
It is understood that both weapons had been stolen. The discovery on Wednesday brings to three the number of firearms uncovered in an ongoing garda investigation in Tralee.
A man in his 20s was arrested from a house in a nearby estate on Tuesday night. He was released yesterday afternoon without charge but a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
