Gunman opens fire on busy hotel in capital

A GUNMAN who opened fire on a busy hotel was not targeting any of its patrons, gardai believe.

The man repeatedly shot at the side door of the Sunnybank Hotel, on Botanic Avenue in Glasnevin, Dublin 9.

Investigators are probing whether he was trying to "put out a sinister message" to the respected owners of the business.

Nobody was injured when the lone gunman struck at 3.30am yesterday. He made his escape on foot in the direction of Mobhi Road and has not been arrested yet.

A source said: "Gardai are looking at whether this was an attempt to intimidate the owners of the hotel, perhaps in a bid to extort money out of them.

"The gunman did not seem to have any interest in whatever patrons were in the bar or the rooms of the hotel," they added.
