Gun thieves fire shots at raid victim

Brendan Farrelly

ARMED raiders who stole guns last night from a house, fired shots at a car as its driver bravely tried to stop their getaway.

The gang had earlier burst into the private house in the Red Gap area of Rathcoole, Co Dublin, and terrorised a family.

At least three men were involved in the incident. They struck at about 9.20pm. It is understood a man, his wife and son were in the house.

The man was held at gunpoint as the gang took over his home.

They grabbed three shotguns. At one stage one of the gang turned on the man and hit him over the head with a hammer.

The raiders then ran from the house and jumped into a getaway car. But the son managed to get into a car and desperately tried to prevent the gang from escaping.

It is understood he attempted to hem in the getaway car as it left the scene. The raiders fired two shots at the car. He escaped uninjured.

Garda reinforcements were sent into Rathcoole as a huge search was launched for the gang. They were still at large early today.

The injured father was taken to hospital for treatment to his head injury which is not believed to be serious.
