The man who died after shooting himself when involved in a stand-off with gardai has been named as Graham Rafter, a gun enthusiast .

Mr Rafter shot himself in the head with his own legally held weapon after a tense stand-off with armed gardai.

His death will be investigated by the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission, who carried out their own examinations at the scene of Wednesday's shooting.

The tragedy unfolded at Farrenboley Park in Windy Arbour, Dublin, when Mr Rafter, who was aged in his 40s, was seen by gardai with a gun as he sat in a car at 3.30pm.

No shots were fired at gardai and at around 4pm, Mr Rafter shot himself.

Mr Rafter's Facebook page has images of him at a firing range and it is understood that he is a member of a gun club.

According to his LinkedIn page, Mr Rafter had been working as a sales rep for Pallas Foods/Sysco Corp since 2002.

He was not previously known to gardai and was considered a "good and decent man" locally.
