Gun attack arrest

GARDAI have arrested a man following a shooting incident in Newcastlewest, Co Limerick, that left two people injured.

The brother and sister were wounded after a man fired at them as they chatted in the Castleview Estate. Their injuries are not life threatening. A 25-year-old man was arrested early yesterday and taken for questioning.

World beaters

CLARE'S main tourist attraction, the Burren and Cliffs of Moher Geopark, has been included in the long list for the 2014 World Responsible Tourism Awards.

More than 200 tourism organisations, initiatives and businesses from throughout the world have been selected for the next stage of the awards across 11 categories.

The Clare facility features in the 'Best Destination' category and is one of 20 destinations that were chosen from hundreds of entries.

Van driver killed

A van driver was killed and a trucker injured following a collision outside Kells, Co Meath.

The victim, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene following the collision with a lorry around 10.30am yesterday. A post-mortem is due to be carried out on the dead man, who is believed to be a 44-year-old from Mullingar, Co Westmeath.

THE Limerick Jazz Festival has been given a major kick-start after tickets for the opening concert by Van Morrison sold out in under two hours. More than 900 tickets priced at €84 each were snapped up for the performance which takes place at UCH on September 27 next. Now in its third year, this year's festival will swing its way through the weekend of September 25 to 28.

Firing range upgrade

The Defence Forces are to get a state-of-the-art computerised firing range in north Cork. Lynch Camp in Kilworth will be the focus of a €1m investment, which will include computer-controlled firing systems.
