Guinness exec won't visit A&E

Published 25/09/2013 | 05:00

A LEADING Guinness executive has backed out of an agreement to spend a night in an A&E department on Arthur's Day, saying he will not get involved in a "media circus".

Peter O'Brien had previously stated that he would be "happy" to spend the evening of the company's promotional night at a hospital to view first-hand the impact of over-drinking on emergency units.

However, on RTE'S 'Prime Time' last night, Mr O'Brien appeared to have changed his mind.

A Diageo spokesman last night denied Mr O'Brien had said he was going to visit an A&E department, suggesting that the Newstalk interview should be listened to again in order to clarify this point.

Asked if any arrangements had been made for Mr O'Brien to visit a hospital, the spokesman said no arrangements had been made and that Mr O'Brien "did not say that he was making an arrangement".
