GSOC investigating fatal crash which left one dead, four others injured

A woman has died and four people, including two children, have been hospitalised following a car crash in Co Westmeath in the early hours of this morning.
The incident, which occurred at 1.30am, involved an off-duty garda.
The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) have confirmed they are investigating the incident.
The watchdog independently investigates incidents involving gardaí that may have resulted in death or serious harm being done to a person.
A woman, in her early fifties, was killed in the collision. She was the driver of one of the cars.
A female passenger and two children in the car were taken to hospital after the incident.

The driver of the second vehicle, an off-duty garda, was also taken to hospital.
Motorists are currently being diverted from the scene and the M4 (Dublin-Sligo road) eastbound is closed between Kinnegad West (J12) and Enfield (J9).
Gardai are diverting cars to the old N4.
Eastbound M6 traffic is also being diverted at Junction 2.
Traffic is now heavy into Kinnegad from the M4 and also from the M6 eastbound at J12.
A forensic examination of the scene is now taking place and the road will remain closed until Saturday afternoon.
GSOC is appealing to anyone who witnessed a blue 2005 registered Opel Astra or a silver 2004 Nissan Micra travelling on the eastbound side of the M4 at about 1.30am to contact them on 1890 600 800.
