THE country's newest senator believes a late-night act of vandalism on his office was politically motivated.

Green Party Senator Niall O Brolchain was seeing red after the exterior of his Galway office was smeared with paint.

The office was only opened by Green Party leader and Environment Minister, John Gormley on May 7.

Initial indications were that two bottles filled with paint were smashed against the building in lower Salthill.

"It's pretty gruesome and I'm appalled by it. It's an act of vandalism and an act of intimidation. I can only speculate ... but one would have to suspect it is politically motivated", Senator O Brolchain said.

The office opening was picketed by a number of individuals, but Senator O Brolchain declined to be drawn on whether he believed any specific group was responsible.
