Greek man quizzed over bombs above Fine Gael TD's office

Fine Gael T Patrick O'Donovan

A GREEK man was arrested by gardai after two non-viable pipe bombs were found in a flat above a Fine Gael TD's constituency office.

The 45-year-old man was questioned after gardai recovered the two devices in a rented residence above the office of Patrick O'Donovan, in Newcastle West, Co Limerick.

Following detailed examinations, investigating officers were satisfied the devices did not pose a threat.

Gardai are questioning a Greek national after the devices were found in the property on Maiden Street.

A small amount of cannabis was also found at the same premises during the search on Wednesday night.

Mr O'Donovan, who became a TD for the first time following the 2011 General Election, was in the Dail at the time.

Mr O'Donovan said he was very appreciative to the gardai for their work.

"It is not the kind of thing you want to hear in your own local town.

"I am very happy and secure in the knowledge that the gardai dealt with it in such a professional manner.

"It is business as usual in my office today," Mr O'Donovan said.
