Grandmother dies in freak accident in supermarket carpark

A woman has died in a freak accident in Co Clare after her car reversed and knocked her to the ground while she was loading in her shopping.

The tragic incident happened in the carpark of Tesco supermarket on Francis Street in Ennis at 1.40pm today.

The 74-year-old woman was fatally injured when she was struck by the moving vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The grandson of the woman was inside the vehicle at the time.

A second child - believed to be the woman's granddaughter - was also standing close-by but both children escaped serious injury

They are being treated at University Hospital Limerick for shock.

The road is currently closed at scene to facilitate Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. Diversions are in place.

Gardaí in Ennis are appealing for witnesses who were in the area of Aldi and Tesco in Ennis to contact them on 065 68 48100, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
