Granddad Jim has large boots to fill
SEAN King (3) stepped into his grandfather Jim's boots yesterday to help launch the Grandparents of the Year competition.
Now in its fifth year, the competition -- organised by Friends of the Elderly -- will culminate in National Grandparents Day on Sunday, September 25, a day in which grandchildren are encouraged to spend some time with their grandparents.
And for those who may not be lucky enough to have grandparents, there is usually at least one elderly person in their life who'd be glad of some company.
"As a member of the fire service we often come in contact with older people living alone -- it's the nature of the job," said grandfather of four, Jim King (58), the most senior member of Phibsboro brigade in Dublin.
He said he and his grandson enjoy a "very good relationship" and see each other "every couple of weeks".
Dermot Kirwan from Friends of the Elderly said it was important for children to have a routine with their grandparents, adding: "It can provide children with a level of stability."
Nominate your grandparent by midnight on Sunday, September 18 at www.grandparentsofthe year.com.
The winning grandparent and their family, who will be announced on Grandparents Day, will receive a three-night travel break.
