Government retains 235 posts at disadvantaged schools following campaign

THE Government has announced major changes to proposed budget cuts to disadvantaged schools.
The 235 so-called DEIS teaching posts that were scheduled to be axed will now be retained.
The u-turn came following strong campaigns from disadvantaged communities who demanded a reversal of the cuts.
The 2012 Budget had proposed cutting almost 300 'legacy' teaching posts in these schools but they will now also be given a slightly higher allocation of resource teachers than had been proposed in the budget.
Grant payments to schools will be cut by 3.5pc instead of 2pc to pay for the retained positions
