The golf legend, who died suddenly on holiday in Spain on Tuesday, will be buried next to his 17-year-old son in their native Galway at Rahoon Cemetery to the west of the city.

Mr O'Connor's family have asked that donations be given to the Laura Lynn Foundation in lieu of flowers at his funeral.

The foundation helps children suffering from life limiting illnesses, and was Mr O'Connor's chosen charity for 2016.

Thousands of people are expected to attend the funeral mass at Galway Cathedral.

The 67-year old, who died suddenly on holiday with his wife Ann in Tenerife, will repose at St Anthony's Room within the Church of St John the Apostle in Knocknacarra, not far from where he grew up, from 2pm today.

His removal to Galway Cathedral will be at 6pm.

His funeral mass will take place at noon tomorrow.

The Ryder Cup hero is survived by his wife Ann, daughter Ann and son Nigel, grandchildren Ava, Zara and Leda and extended family including his golfing mentor and uncle, Christy O'Connor Snr.
