A building contractor who unearthed one of the most significant finds of ancient coins in Irish history thought they were worthless and flung them back on the ground, not realising hthe find could be worth €500,000.

Builder Shane Comerford (36) of Grangemockler, Co Tipperary, said he initially thought the treasure trove of 81 coins found when they were renovating in nearby Carrick-on-Suir and dating back to the 17th century were worthless.

But when Shane Murray (32) dusted them off to reveal the dates and four distinctive crests of Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales, they realised they might be onto something.
