President Michael D Higgins presented 37 Irish and international students with gold medals at the 2012 Undergraduate Awards ceremony, which recognises outstanding academic achievement.
The awards programme aims to inspire, support and celebrate undergraduate students.
Winner in the Medical Sciences category was Lewis Hou, who has been dubbed "The Gok Wan of Neuroscience" because of his talent for demystifying the scientific study of the nervous system.
"All of the submissions being recognised here today are a reassuring reminder of the great wealth of innovative and imaginative talent that exists amongst our young people -- the leaders, policy makers, scientists and artists of the future," said President Higgins.
