THE Elton John AIDS Foundation funds more than 1,100 projects worldwide with grants in excess of €40m.
The singer was one of the first superstars to use his celebrity status to raise money to help reduce the spread of HIV.
The needle exchange programmes involve heroin addicts bringing used dirty needles to pharmacies.
In return, they receive a pack with clean needles.
The pack contains various items needed for injection. The practice greatly reduces the risk of spreading infection between addicts.
However, not all pharmacists are keen to be involved in the scheme. They do not want to attract drug addicts to their shops who can end up demanding drugs as well as needles.
