World -enowned percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie is set to perform as part of the Londonderry City of Culture celebrations, it has been confirmed.
Dame Evelyn, who took part in last summer's Olympics opening ceremony, will have the lead role in Sensonic alongside a host of musicians with hearing or sight impairments from both sides of the Irish border.
The solo percussionist, who has been profoundly deaf since the age of 12, is the star attraction for the event on May 14 at The Venue, Ebrington Square.
Sensonic marks the end of a three-year European Union- funded project - Sensory Engagement Programme (SEP) - which aims to increase the confidence of blind, partially sighted, deaf and hard of hearing people living in the border areas.
"Throughout the project we have used music, drama and dance as powerful tools to let participants express themselves and build their confidence. We are thrilled that Dame Evelyn Glennie will be performing alongside local performers and musicians in what will be a fast moving and diverse evening of entertainment," said project manager Alice Lewis.
