Give us an election date Brian, pleads Fianna Fail's O'Rourke
OUTSPOKEN Fianna Fail TD Mary O'Rourke has piled more pressure on Taoiseach Brian Cowen to name the date of the General Election -- and took a sideswipe at him over his round of golf with Sean FitzPatrick.
Ms O'Rourke said Fianna Fail candidates across the country were waiting on a date and the uncertainty was disrupting their plans for the election.
And in a reference to Mr Cowen's current troubles over meetings with disgraced former Anglo Irish Bank chairman Sean FitzPatrick, she also said the naming of an election date had nothing to do with golf.
"I'm looking for a date for the election, nothing to do with golf or not playing golf," Ms O'Rourke told the Irish Independent.
"If we knew where we were, we'd be able to plan out. We just don't know. I just think that if we knew, we could plan accordingly."
She said candidates were tired of waiting and had expected Mr Cowen to name a date.
Newstalk radio also reported that she said party candidates were in "a state of suspended animation and we don't all play golf to fill our days".
But she said the controversial round of golf in July 2008 was a matter for Mr Cowen, and she expected he would be able to explain it later this week.
"I just want to get the date out and over," the Longford-Westmeath TD added. "I just want the date announced and we'll know how to plan or whatever we're going to do."
