Girls nipping at their mum's heels in the fashion stakes

FOUR women on the stage and four very different fashion stories.

Michelle Obama stole the show at the Gaiety Theatre last night in a sharply tailored navy trouser suit worn over a high impact, purple-to-copper silk tunic with an eye catching diagonal, asymetric hemline.

FLOTUS's outfit was full of personality and surprising, contradicting lines, while the Taoiseach's wife, Fionnuala Kenny, welcomed Mrs Obama to the mike wearing a more conventional look with a mink satin, wide-lapel coat with twirly floral patterns and a mid-calf hemline.

The President's wife, Sabina Higgins, displayed a keen appreciation of colour as she arrived for the Riverdance show wearing a cerise suit with flattering nipped-in waist. The two buttoned, V necked jacket had an elegant, gentle peplum detail and was trimmed with a ruffled, zig zag braid.

Moya Doherty, the driving force behind 'Riverdance' and the former RTE producer, hasn't just got an ear for music but an eye for contemporary fashion too. To welcome the Obamas to the 'Riverdance' experience, she chose a monochrome two-piece full of architectural, pared back qualities.

There are not many Irish women in their 50s who would be comfortable baring their upper arms in public, not to mention in front of the world's press and TV cameras, but Moya (55) did with a halterneck, peplum waisted white shirt.

It was very Azzedine Alaia in style, and peplum gathered volume and the silhouette narrowed in with ankle grazing, black skinny trousers which showcased her chunky heeled, platform shoes with criss cross straps.

Interestingly, each of the four stamped their own personality on their teatime outfits with very different accessorising jewellery. Mrs Obama tamed the misbehaving fringe, swept the bangs to the side, and guests could glimpse dangling, two-piece silver and black earrings.

Mrs Kenny opted for a necklace of delicate crystals in pink quartz and carnelian, while Mrs Higgins took her jewellery inspiration from the style icon in whose memorial suite the Obama girls are staying at the Shelbourne Hotel – namely Grace Kelly.

Mrs Obama wore a two stranded pearl necklace and a strand of pearls around her wrist. Arriving in Ireland, the Obama sisters brightened up an otherwise grey, wet day at Belfast airport with their ice cream coloured flat shoes – pistachio green for Sasha and bubblegum pink for Malia.

However, Sasha proved her pink credentials chosing a vibrant, Barbi pink V neck top, check shirt and jeans in a deeper shade of pink under a navy pea coat.

Michelle's first outfit of the day was a stone coloured cream belted coat with very fussy detailing, including shoulder flaps, peaked shoulders and a curious wrap around obi belt in fabric, on top of which she wore a brown belt.

It had none of the elegance of the Thom Browne navy coat she wore to Barack's second inauguration. She added a trellis-print tan, long gilet on top of her camel top and rust trousers for her trip to Trinity College,

Sasha changed into a navy floral dress with navy patterned tights and a white flower necklace for her trip to the theatre, while her big sis chose a floral print pinafore and cream shirt.

The Obama girls have certainly inherited their mum's eye for fashion.
