A TEENAGER was left semi-conscious after a vicious assault as she was out walking near her home.
Gardai today appealed for information about the attack on the 18-year-old girl which occurred at Compass Hill in Kinsale, Co Cork.
The attack, which took place at 10.30pm last night, resulted in the teen suffering serious head injuries.
She was rushed to Cork University Hospital (CUH) where she remains in a stable condition.
The motive involved in the attack is unclear and Gardai are working to determine if it was a robbery gone wrong or if the attacker may have had a sexual motive.
Gardai have not yet been able to interview the teen to determine precisely what happened.
One source stressed that the precise details of the attack will only be known once forensic results are available and the teen is able to give a detailed interview.
However initial indications are that the attack happened after the teen tried to flee from someone.
The area of Compass Hill, on the outskirts of the popular Cork tourist town, was sealed off to allow for a detailed investigation by forensic experts.
Gardai also launched door to door inquiries to determine if anyone spotted suspicious activity.
"This appears to have been a very nasty incident and we would appeal for public assistance," one garda said.
