Girl (12) knocked down trying to rescue pet dog

A YOUNG girl sustained serious head injuries after being knocked down when she apparently ran to save a pet dog on a busy road, writes Ralph Riegel.

The 12-year-old was injured when she tried to catch a dog after it ran out on to Harbourview Road in Knocknaheeny, Cork. The accident occurred shortly after 4pm.

Gardai and a HSE ambulance raced to the scene and the girl was taken to the special head trauma unit at Cork University Hospital. She was in a serious condition last night.

The driver involved was said to be deeply distraught.
