Gilmore's risky gag at Enda's expense
TANAISTE Eamon Gilmore cracked a joke at top public servant Dermot McCarthy's retirement party about Enda Kenny missing the Connacht final last weekend.
Delivering a speech because Mr Kenny was at the crisis summit in Brussels, Mr Gilmore said only two things would keep the Taoiseach away from the gathering -- "the first was a European Council meeting and the second was a Connacht final".
The ironic gag was regarded by some present as risky but most felt it was merely tongue-in-cheek.
Mr Kenny missed the final between Mayo and Roscommon last week, amid accusations he was staying away because of the protests over the closure of the Roscommon Hospital A&E unit.
The party was attended by around 200 guests, including former Taoisigh John Bruton and Brian Cowen.
