Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore said the claim by one of the foremost magazines in the US that President Michael D Higgins is gay was an “embarrassment” for the author rather than anyone else.
The happily married President was described as an “acknowledged homosexual” in an article in ‘Forbes’ magazine, the influential US business bible.
The article was subsequently taken down when the error was spotted.
The journalist who wrote the article has acknowledged his “terrible” error and apologised to the President.
When asked for his thoughts on the publication, Mr Gilmore says the embarrassment lies with the author – and not anyone else.
“On the Forbes article, I understand it was online and was taken down. That tells us everything we need to know about that article. It is more a source of embarrassment for the journalist who wrote it rather than it is for anyone else,” he said.
