TANAISTE Eamon Gilmore has defended the Government’s new graduate nursing recruitment scheme.
The Government is being accused of offering so-called ‘yellow pack’ jobs, as the new recruits will be paid less than existing nurses.
Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin, Sinn Fein deputy leader Mary-Lou McDonald and Independent TD Mattie McGrath all criticised the Government’s policy on Leaders Questions in the Dail.
But Mr Gilmore stood by the initiative.
“It’s adding nurses in our health system and it’s employment for graduate nurses that wouldn’t otherwise get it,” he said.
