Gift gong as Mario joins radio legends

THE man behind the famous Roy Keane and Bertie Ahern sketches on Today FM has been honoured with an outstanding achievement award by his industry colleagues.

Impressionist Mario Rosenstock's 'Gift Grub' characters have been making people laugh for 12 years on Ian Dempsey's breakfast show.

"I imagine this is a message from colleagues in the radio industry to give up and stop but I'm happy to go on," Mr Rosenstock joked yesterday.

At 39, he is a good deal younger than previous recipients, which include Larry Gogan, Micheal O Muir-cheartaigh and Jimmy Magee.

But a select committee of radio industry figures voted for Rosenstock to receive the accolade at the Phonographic Performance Ireland (PPI) Awards

"We have a terrible habit of waiting until people are dead in this country before celebrating them," Today FM boss Willie O'Reilly said.

"I think Mario has more than enough of a track record to be worthy of this honour, as well as being utterly unique."
