Gentle giant was loved in wife's seaside town
HIS height meant that Adrian Donohoe always stood out from the crowd.
But it was never more obvious than during summers on the beach in the west of Ireland, when he would run into the sea with his children, all dressed in wetsuits.
The slain detective's wife, Caroline Deloughrey, who is also a garda officer, hails from the Clare seaside resort of Kilkee.
Each summer, Adrian and Caroline and their children, Amy and Niall, would relax with her parents, Stevie and Bridie, at their home overlooking the Atlantic town.
Neighbours of the Deloughrey family said dad Adrian would take every opportunity to go to the beach with his children.
"He'd be down here each summer and heading off down to the beach with his wetsuit on. The kids would have their buckets and spades with them.
"They'd be laughing away with each other – another day of fun ahead. Only now do we realise what a great sight it was to see," one man said.
Another neighbour said: "Caroline is a lovely lady – everyone here is heartbroken for her. A gentle giant is what you'd call him."
The Deloughrey family spent the weekend comforting Caroline and her two children.
Many from Clare will travel tomorrow and Wednesday to Louth to bid farewell to Adrian, who was a very familiar and welcome arrival to Kilkee.
