Gay rugby team tries to kick clubbing image into touch

THE captain of Ireland's only gay rugby team hopes his club will tackle gay stereotypes and become a role model for young homosexual sportsmen.

A TG4 documentary, 'Queering the Pitch' (Wednesday 9.30pm), which has followed the trials and tribulations of the Emerald Warriors, shows the team flying the flag for Ireland at the world's gay rugby tournament, The Bingham World Cup.

Team captain Ciaran O'Sullivan said the Emerald Warriors show there is more to the gay scene than clubbing. "It gives gay people a slightly different option from going to clubs and drinking," said the 33-year-old.
