The incident happened at Moyclare, Ferbane last night and it is understood the teenager sustained injuries before escaping to raise the alarm at a neighbour’s house.

The girl was cycling her bicycle between her own house and that of a friend's when a white van pulled up beside her and a man engaged her in conversation and then tried to pull her into the vehicle.

The male is understood to be being middle-aged, small with dark hair and was wearing glasses.

Gardai are following a number of lines of inquiry but have also warned the public to be vigilant, especially because school holidays are on at the moment.

“Parents are advised that the Gardaí are concerned about what happened near Ferbane last night and they should be aware of their children's whereabouts at all times,' Superintendent Dave Kavanagh said.

Gardaí have appealed to witnesses or anyone with any with information to contact them on 057 9169710, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
