FURTHER searches are due to take place for the remains of victims of suspected serial killer Larry Murphy.

Search teams and garda divers conducted a secret trawl of a lake in Co Wicklow last month but nothing was found.

A garda source said further locations in the county would be searched in the coming months.

Murphy, from Baltinglass, Co Wicklow, was released from prison in August 2010 after serving 10 years of a 15-year sentence for abduction and rape and is currently living in mainland Europe.

It was reported over the weekend that the searches were triggered by a confession made by Murphy in Arbour Hill Prison to a fellow inmate.

The man, who is serving a life sentence for murder, told gardai that Murphy had discussed murdering Co Kildare teenager Deirdre Jacob.

He said Murphy had provided details of how he scattered toys on the back seat of his car so she would be comfortable talking to him.

The inmate added that Murphy admitted knocking her out and pulling her into the vehicle after he had asked for directions.

Murphy (47) told the prisoner he took Ms Jacob up into the mountains, but she put up a struggle and he grabbed a hammer and killed her. He said he then dumped her body in a lake.

Ms Jacob (19) was taken in broad daylight from near her home in Newbridge in July 1998.

A garda spokesman declined to comment on the searches, but it is understood the prison admission is being taken seriously.

Cold-case detectives have continued to identify locations where Murphy might have buried victims.

Last month's searches were kept secret to avoid alerting him to garda operations and so as not to give false hope to the families of the missing women.

Gardai are following leads into Murphy's possible participation in the disappearance of several women. In particular, he was on a list of suspects in connection with missing Jo Jo Dullard, who was 21 at the time of her disappearance.

Her last known location was at a phone box in Moone, Co Kildare, from where she had called a friend. She said she was planning to hitch to her home in Callan, Co Kilkenny.

Gardai have so far failed to find any concrete evidence that might link Murphy to any of the cases.
