They intercepted 250g of the drug, officially described as 4-methylmethcathinone or 4 MEC, after a controlled delivery to an address in Sligo.

Officers seized the drugs, which had a street value of €8,750, when they intercepted a car in the Forthill area of the town.

Two men in their 20s were arrested and taken for questioning at Sligo garda station under the Drug Trafficking Act, which allows gardai to hold them without charge for up to seven days.

The seizure was made following an intelligence-led operation involving the Customs, the Garda National Drugs Unit and the Sligo Drugs and Crime Unit.

Last week, Customs officers and gardai intercepted 4kg of the drugs, worth an estimated €140,000, following a controlled delivery to an address in Letterkenny.

Both packages had been posted here from China.
