THE garda Twitter account is probably the last place someone would go to look for football transfer news.

But yesterday it posted about Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo. A post beside information on an N3 traffic collision, read: "ronaldo going back to utd".

The mistake was quickly followed by the clarification: "sorry mistake re ronaldo".

A garda press office statement said that the tweet was sent in error.

"Gardai apologise for an inadvertent tweet message, which was sent on the garda traffic account. The account wasn't hacked but was a human error," it said.

It is understood that the accident occurred while a garda was giving a talk to civilians on the effectiveness of the force's online presence.

The officer believed that the account was signed out on a laptop and one of the civilians, who didn't understand Twitter, posted the tweet to the account from the laptop by mistake.
