GARDAI have stepped up their inquiries into the activities of a faction of the Real IRA in the south-west of the country after the discovery of a terrorist arms dump at the weekend, writes Tom Brady.
Officers have been involved in a major investigation into dissident republicans operating in the area for the past year after incidents at the funeral of murdered Dublin terrorist leader, Alan Ryan, who was shot dead following clashes with drug trafficking crime bosses.
The investigation has now been intensified as a result of the find, which was made by a man out walking with his gun dog in a wooded area at Windy Gap, Meelick, Co Clare, on Saturday.
Gardai said last night they expected to make arrests after they had carried out further inquiries.
Officers have already made several arrests of suspected members of the Real IRA and the Continuity IRA as a result of their ongoing inquiries.
