GARDAI are investigating the death of a woman who perished in a house fire.

The body of a mother of three, named locally as Elizabeth Loftus (50), was discovered by fire officers on the floor of her home at School Lane, off the Malin Road, in Carndonagh, Co Donegal, just after 11am yesterday.

Gardai carried out a technical examination of the scene to determine the cause of the blaze, which did little damage to the surrounding furniture.

State Pathologist Professor Marie Cassidy travelled to the scene last night to carry out an examination of the badly burned remains.

Mrs Loftus , who had three sons, lived alone. She was separated from her husband.

Donegal chief fire officer Bobby McMenamin said two firefighters found a female occupant, who was already dead, in the living area.

"Something accidental happened, but it's difficult to say from initial inquiries what exactly went wrong, but it does not appear to have been caused maliciously," he said.

Donegal county councillor Padraig MacLochlainn, who represents the area, said it was a very sad tragedy for the family and the local community.
