GARDAI in Cavan are investigating the suspicious death of a mother-of-one over the weekend.
Antra Ozolina, believed to be 49 and originally from Latvia, worked as a mushroom picker and was found dead in a house on Main Street, Killnaleck, Co Cavan, last Saturday (June 28).
It has emerged that she had booked flights to return to Liepa, eastern Latvia and was to depart from Dublin airport on July 20.
It is understood the trip was a holiday she had planned for some time.
Antra, who has a daughter in her 20s, was living with two other people in Kilnaleck and worked for Breffni Mushrooms for ten years.
It was initially thought she had died by suicide but garda investigations and a post-mortem proved that she had not died by her own hand.
Eugene Kiernan, business owner at Breffni Mushrooms, described her as “happy-go-lucky and extremely hard working.”
“She always had a smile on her face. She worked 40 hours a week and never missed a day in ten years,” he told the Irish Independent.
“She was very dependable and never turned up late a day in her life.
“I don't know if she was married or had a partner; her personal life was her own business.
“She was really looking forward to returning home later this month. It was nothing unusual; she returned home a number of times throughout the year.”
He added: “She certainly didn't commit suicide and there's no suspicion that drugs played any part. She wasn't depressed in anyway whatsoever and she enjoyed her work.
“She was very obliging and a pure lady to her fingertips.
“As far as I know she gave birth to her daughter in Latvia and then moved here.
“It's a shock to everyone. She socialised with her own community in the town and she enjoyed life.”
A co-worker added that news of her sudden death has left her friends “in a state of disbelief.”
“She's the last person you'd expect this to happen to. There is suspicion over her death but we don't know yet if a murder investigation has been launched.
“She was fantastic and a very hard working mother. She came here for a better life and she was only here to do one thing and that was to make money and send it home. We're all very shaken over it.”
Two people arrested by gardai investigating her death were released tonight without charge.
A file will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions
