Gardai probe damage to 37 headstones in Limerick

GARDAI are investigating the vandalism of 37 headstones in a cemetery in Limerick city.

The headstones in Mount St Lawrence were knocked over or smashed by a gang of culprits on Saturday night/Sunday morning.

Investigating officers are studying CCTV footage from the area and have taken fingerprints in a bid to identify the culprits.

Officials from Limerick City Council estimate that it will cost €50,000 for the headstones to be repaired.

The graveyard dates back to the mid 19th century and many of the damaged headstones are from the 1800s.

Last year, a woman was robbed in the cemetery while she prayed at the grave of family members.
