Gardai investigating possible arson attack on Irish Water storage facility
GARDAI are investigating a possible arson attack at a storage facility used by contractors installing water meters.
Three units of the Sligo Fire Service fought the blaze on Union Place in the town after a fire was spotted at 6am by a member of staff at the nearby railway station.
Gardai confirmed experts were investigating the cause of the fire.
GMC Sierra, the Irish Water installation contractors, were storing the meters in the storage units.
Gardai have preserved the scene pending a full forensic examination.
A spokeswoman told Independent.ie: "Irish Water can confirm that in the early hours of this morning there was a fire in a depot used by one of the contractors working on the metering programme.
"The fire has been brought under control by Sligo Fire Department.
"This matter is currently under investigation by An Garda Siochana and the Fire Department and Irish Water cannot comment further on the matter."
